Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

The Police Chief is the top-ranking law enforcement officers who manage and supervise all police department personnel and direct all daily police department operations. The Police Chief is a working police officer within the city who may work full-time shifts during all hours, including weekends and holidays.  The Police Chief reports to the city manager and usually works administratively within an office inside the police department, but also sometimes investigates crime scenes in the field.  The Police Chief is a highly visible public figure as well as a leader

Qualifications and Education Requirements

A high school diploma or GED are minimum requirements for most entry-level law enforcement jobs, however a bachelor’s degree in police administration, criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred. The Police Chief must also achieve multiple years of work experience (usually a minimum of five years) in law enforcement as a commanding officer, such as a commander, lieutenant, or captain. The chief of police must also be a resident of the city of Cherryville or within the township.

The police chief must pass a physical and psychiatric exam. In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, the desired educational requirements are an associate's degree or professional certificate levels, with demonstrated skills in community law enforcement

Additional Notes

  • Manages the Police Department, which includes hiring, assessing, disciplining and firing personnel. Also, conduct training of police officers whenever necessary.

  • Establishment and maintenance of a healthy working environment for all personnel.

  • Develop policies and procedures that are in-line with the guidelines set by the City Council.

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the police department by preparing reports, conducting investigations (e.g. complaints) and maintaining peace and order all over the city.

  • Interpret codes, laws, and ordinances and uphold them at all times.

  • Submission of clear and complete materials such as policies, procedures, and reports. Shall also be able to present them publicly as needed.

  • Work closely with the City Manager for planning the budget(s) of the Police Department.

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities stated in the ordinances of your city.

  • Develop programs that will prevent criminal activities within your scope of jurisdiction.

  • Perform public relations duties and attend the council meeting once a month.

  • Write letters and emails on behalf of the Police Department and other officials as deemed necessary.

  • Cover other administrative duties when required.

  • Maintain electronic and manual filing systems.

  • Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.

  • Take accurate minutes of meetings.

  • Coordinate office procedures.

  • Reply to email, telephone or face-to-face enquiries.

  • Develop and update administrative systems to make the police department more efficient.

  • Resolve administrative problems.

  • Answer telephone calls and relay accurate information.

  • Oversee and supervise the work of junior staff.

  • Greet and assist visitors to the office.

  • Photocopy and print out documents on behalf of other colleagues.

  • Other duties as assigned by department head or City Manager's Office.

Seasonal Leaf Collection Worker

The City of Cherryville will be accepting applications for two (2) seasonal leaf collection workers. Applications are available at the Public Works Office and will be accepted thru September 30, 2022. Applicants will be required to work 40 hours a week from October 1, until February 1, removing loose piles of leaves around town with a collection truck. Hours are from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday thru Friday. Driver’s license required. Applicant will be required to work outside in all weather conditions and must be able to pick up and move at least 50 lbs. Police Officer Position 

The City of Cherryville Police Department is accepting applications for full time police officer. Duties include, Patrolling; Investigating crimes; Traffic control; Apprehending suspects; Operating a patrol vehicle or walking to observe for violations, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order; Responding to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; Assist citizens by supplying information or advise; Serves warrants and makes arrests, testifies in court; Provides police escorts, investigates automobile collisions; Maintains records and prepares detailed reports; Serves as dispatcher when assigned; Performs related task as required

 

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina, an acceptable driving history, and a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate issued by the State of North Carolina.

 

Applicants will also undergo a thorough background investigation including a physical examination, psychological examination, criminal records check and drug screening.

Sanitation Driver

The City of Cherryville will be accepting applications for the position of Sanitation Maintenance Mechanic Level II for the

Cherryville Sanitation Department (Truck Driver). Applicant must have a knowledge of heavy equipment such as Sanitation Trucks, Back-Hoe, Loader, Dump Truck, Ect. Heavy Equipment operator preferred. Job requires employee to perform after hours and week­end work at times. Employee would be required to have knowledge and operation of Sanitation Trucks and able to run proper routes. Must have a CDL Drivers License.
