Crowders Mountain State Park, located about twenty minutes from Cherryville, offers deep, thick woodland, lightly rolling hills, and a marvelous climate for hiking, picnicking, wilderness camping, and nature study.

Kings Mountain State Military Park, located about thirty minutes from Cherryville, offers opportunities for hiking, boating, wilderness and RV camping, and picnicking all on the site of one of the pivotal battles of the American Revolution. Within the county are the Schiele Museum and Planetarium, Gaston County Historical Museum, and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.

The City is also served by the Gaston County Arts Council. Residents participate in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April and the Arts in the Park in August. The Cherryville Public Library, a part of the Gaston County Public Library System, offers over 400,000 volumes and electronic media.

Perhaps the most unique of the social and civic organizations are the New Year's Shooters, who preserve the area's German heritage by honoring the custom of beginning each year with a chant and the shooting of muskets.
